Our History

PCS has a rich history spanning over a century

Origins and First Performance

The group traces its roots back to October 16, 1888, when it presented its inaugral performance at the Presbyterian Chapel during a torrential downpour.  This historic concert featured Haydn's Creation ("The Heavens are Telling") and soloists (Miss Flora Williams from Martin's Ferry, Ohio and Mr. W.B. Meeks from Huntington, WV) from across the region, marking the first time voices from the entire local area united for choral music.

Hiatus and Renaissance

Following its early years, PCS experienced a several-year hiatus.  It was revitalized in 1966 under the conductorship of Edward Sprague.  This resurgence led to the group's official incorporation as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization in 1967, governed by a nine-member board of governors.

Modern Era

Under the long-time direction of Luke Zyla, who has served since the mid-1990s, the group has continued its mission to provide high-quality musical performances and foster community engagement through choral arts.  PCS performs multiple concerts annually at venues such as the Parkersburg Art Center and local churches, maintaining a tradition of excellence and community service.
